MONTHLY Meeting TOUR Wednesday May 15, 2002 Invest in Yourself - Join AFE today! _________________________________________ Special Tour of the Whitehead BioMedical Research Building at Emory University This eight story building, that has 325,000 SF and cost $82.8 Million, which includes two floors below ground level, houses three basic science departments - Medicine Cell Biology, Genetics and Physiology. The building includes 150 Faculty offices and 150 laboratory modules with large open laboratory spaces. The building uses materials, energy and water resources efficiently, minimizes site impact and addresses health issues relating to the indoor environment. An energy recovery system added $500,000 to the cost of the building but will pay for itself in three years. An extensive building automation and control system saves energy by optimizing HVAC and lighting use. The building incorporates products that are manufacturing using post consumer and post industrial waste and materials are manufactured locally reducing energy used in transportation. There is a stat of the art robotic washing system that uses less water, chemicals and energy than other washers of its type and frees staff from this repetitive, undesirable task. Air conditioning condensate is piped to nearby cooling towers, saving an estimated 2.5 million gallons of water a year which would otherwise have been discarded into the county's sanitary sewer system.
